A Game-Changing Caliber for Long-Range Predator Hunting

In late 2017, Federal Premium introduced an innovative round known as the 224 Valkyrie. This caliber quickly garnered attention among shooting enthusiasts. The initial runs included the flagship 90-grain Gold Medal Sierra MatchKing, which was rigorously tested. Eventually, the 60-grain American Eagle Nosler Ballistic Tip emerged as an excellent choice for predator and varmint hunters.

Early Winter Conditions for Hunting
In the North Country of Minnesota, winter arrives early, activating hungry predators. During this time, coyotes are less wary and more curious, making early season calling exceptionally effective. Following a significant snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, the conditions were ideal for testing the new caliber. A suitable firearm was essential for pushing the new ammunition downrange.

The Hunt Experience
After extensive range testing, the transition to the field was seamless. Equipped with a FoxPro Fusion and strategically positioned, the hunt began with mid-volume calls to attract nearby predators. After a few minutes, the call was adjusted to focus on coyote sounds. At the nine-minute mark, a striking coyote appeared, captivated by the decoy. A well-timed shot resulted in a successful takedown at 123 yards. This experience highlighted the effectiveness of the 224 Valkyrie in real hunting scenarios.

The Ammunition Overview
The 224 Valkyrie was specifically designed for AR platform rifles, aiming to dominate long-range shooting. Based on a 30 Rem./6.8 SPC case necked down to .224 caliber, it offers superior trajectories compared to other AR-15 cartridges, such as the .223 Rem and 6.5 Grendel. With significantly reduced recoil, it provides comparable ballistics to larger cartridges like the 6.5 Creedmoor.

Initial performance metrics from Federal indicated a velocity of 2,700 fps at the muzzle from a 24-inch barrel, remaining supersonic at 1,300 yards. Testing revealed velocities ranging from 3,260 fps to 2,280 fps across different rifles. The 224 Valkyrie boasts over 125 inches less drop and nearly 70 inches less wind drift at 1,000 yards compared to the .223 Rem and other similar calibers.

Federal offers the 224 Valkyrie in four configurations:
1) The 90-grain Gold Medal Sierra MatchKing is designed for precision and long-range accuracy, making it ideal for competitive shooters and effective against coyotes.
2) The 60-grain Nosler Ballistic Tip is perfect for predator and varmint hunting, delivering unmatched speed at 3,300 fps from a 24-inch barrel.
3) The 90-grain Fusion serves as a mid-sized game cartridge, ideal for deer hunting with reduced recoil.
4) The 75-grain American Eagle TMJ is an entry-level, cost-effective option, perfect for casual shooters and three-gun competitors.

The Rifles for Optimal Performance
With the introduction of the 224 Valkyrie, several manufacturers quickly developed compatible barrels and bolts. For predator hunting, an AR-platform rifle was essential, alongside a bolt-action rifle to test the ammunition’s capabilities.

JP Enterprises, a well-regarded name in modern sporting rifles, produced the JP PSC-11, featuring a 20-inch barrel and adjustable gas block. This rifle’s low-mass bolt carrier and Silent Capture recoil spring enhance shooting accuracy and comfort.

For precision shooting, the C&H Precision Weapons rifle was utilized. This custom-built firearm is lightweight and low-recoil, making it suitable for young shooters. It has demonstrated accuracy at impressive distances, showcasing the 224 Valkyrie‘s potential.

The Future of the 224 Valkyrie
The 224 Valkyrie is poised to revolutionize long-range shooting with its performance and affordability. With numerous manufacturers expected to adopt this caliber, it is set to become a staple in the shooting community. The combination of superior ballistics and manageable recoil makes it an attractive option for both seasoned shooters and newcomers alike.
