In a groundbreaking move for northern hunting regions, Wisconsin introduced an experimental early teal season for the first time. This season, scheduled for seven days, allowed hunters to target only blue-winged and green-winged teal. Many viewed this teal hunt as an exciting opportunity to enjoy favorable weather while avoiding competition with other hunting seasons, such as bowhunting for deer.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established a framework mandating that this special teal season be held in September, prior to the regular duck season. Throughout the three-year experimental period, the number of ducks harvested during this new season will be monitored to assess the viability of an early teal season.

The Natural Resources Board approved the following season structure:

  • Early teal season will be open from September 1 to 7;
  • Only blue-winged and green-winged teal may be harvested;
  • Daily bag limit of six teal;
  • Shooting hours on opening day (September 1) will commence at 9 a.m. and conclude at 7 p.m.;
  • Shooting hours from September 2 to 7 will begin at sunrise and end at 7 p.m.

Hunting Experience

On the first day of the hunt, numerous ducks were observed flying, which kept hunters alert. However, correctly identifying the teal in time to take a shot proved more challenging than anticipated.

The best opportunities for hunters arose when birds flew over the decoys, allowing ample time for proper identification. Given that only blue-winged or green-winged teal could be targeted, participants in this early season needed to exercise patience and caution in their selections. Teal can be easily recognized by their distinctive wing colors (blue or green patches) and their smaller size.

Conclusion

Overall, the early teal season was deemed a success. The chance to hunt favored duck species in warm weather provided an excellent precursor to the upcoming duck season and allowed hunting dogs to refine their retrieving skills.
