Hunting in Alaska: The Ultimate Guide to CVA Firearms

Hunting in diverse environments, particularly with a muzzleloader, presents numerous challenges. Factors such as fluctuating humidity, rain, snow, and sudden temperature changes can lead to moisture buildup, which adversely affects the firearm. This is especially true in regions like Alaska, where conditions can be severe. Understanding how to effectively manage these elements is crucial for successful hunting.

Over the years, manufacturers have focused on enhancing the weatherproofing of their muzzleloaders. Having tested numerous models throughout my career in the muzzleloading industry, it is evident that the CVA V2 lineup stands out in terms of durability against the elements. A critical area of concern for muzzleloader users is internal corrosion, which is where the nitride process comes into play.

Enhancing Durability with Nitride Treated Barrel

CVA has pioneered advanced barrel treatments for its Accura line of muzzleloading rifles, utilizing a technique known as salt-bath nitriding. This method, already prevalent in military applications, hardens the outer layer of steel, significantly improving durability and corrosion resistance compared to traditional chrome lining. Given the susceptibility of muzzleloaders to corrosion, the application of this technology to the premium Accura MR and Accura V2 thumbhole models, as well as the Optima line, elevates these firearms to an exceptional standard.

Dudley McGarity, CEO of BPI Outdoors, which owns the CVA brand, noted, “Utilizing the nitride process on muzzleloaders was a natural progression for us. We have successfully applied this process to many OEM barrels produced under our Bergara Barrels brand, and we recognized its potential benefits for muzzleloaders.”

Although constructed from 416 stainless steel, the nitride process gives these barrels a matte black finish. McGarity highlighted that wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and lubricity are superior to those of blued carbon steel or untreated stainless steel. Unlike popular exterior ceramic coatings, nitriding protects both the interior and exterior of the barrel, ensuring longevity even after thousands of shots. “This is the closest we’ve seen to a rustproof muzzleloader barrel. While some surface rust may occur in highly humid or salty air, it does not penetrate the steel, allowing for easy removal,” he added.

Cabela’s Ambassador, Marsha Shearer’s antelope ranked No. 3 for the women’s muzzleloader world record.

With this innovative technology, it was time to put it to the test. After applying for several years with Quentin Smith of QRS Outdoors in Wyoming, Marsha Schearer, a fellow Cabela’s Ambassador, and I drew antelope tags. I was the first to hunt, and we scanned the sage-covered hillsides for pronghorn antelope.

After a short time, I realized the challenge was not whether I would get a buck, but how selective I wanted to be. Having guided antelope hunters for years, I was familiar with the terrain. That afternoon, we spotted a nice buck feeding near a creek.

AeroTip Bullets

We maneuvered just enough to get within muzzleloader range. As smoke billowed, the PowerBelt Aerolite struck true, and I quickly tagged my impressive speed goat. The remainder of the day was spent searching for a heavy-horned buck that Quentin had been tracking throughout the summer. The following day, we finally spotted him with a doe during the rut. Marsha made three stalking attempts to close the distance. As rain began to fall, maintaining a low profile became essential due to the pronghorn’s keen eyesight.

Tip: PowerBelt AeroLite AeroTip Bullets are among the most advanced muzzleloading bullets available, offering the benefits of saboted bullets without the associated drawbacks. These full-caliber bullets are easier to load, do not require cleaning after every shot, and are designed for standard loads.

As Marsha navigated the damp sage, she positioned herself for a shot. When the hammer fell on her CVA Accura V2, the buck collapsed instantly. She had just potentially set a new women’s muzzleloader world record. Excitement filled the air as we measured the horns, confirming it was a contender. After the drying period, the official score revealed it ranked No. 3. While her buck surpassed mine in size, hunting together as a family on “Shoot Straight TV” always brings joy to our experiences.

Regardless of where the hunt takes you, consider the new CVA models featuring nitride technology. The Accura V2 LR, equipped with a 30″ nitride corrosion-resistant barrel, is particularly recommended, especially with the thumbhole stock.
